A microphone is a device that can capture sound and send a signal to be mixed, amplified, reproduced or recorded. Microphones can offer a lot of versatility, and there is a wide range of options available that will affect sound quality. 

Here are a few of the most common types of microphones for live events:

  • Gooseneck microphone: This type of microphone is commonly attached to a podium to amplify or record a speaker.
  • Wired microphone: Wired microphones are a great option when your speaker or performer isn’t going to be moving around the stage. They are less expensive than wireless microphones and can be more reliable; however, wired microphones become cumbersome if they need to be passed around or moved during the event. 
  • Handheld microphone: If you are planning to have a panel discussion or an audience Q&A at your event, wireless handheld microphones will offer the most mileage, as they can easily be passed around from person to person as speakers change.  Wireless mics for conferences will amplify a speaker’s responses and project sound further back in the room.
  • Lavalier: Commonly referred to as lavs, lavalier microphones can be clipped onto a presenter’s shirt to allow them to freely use their hands while speaking. 
  • Headset: Like lavaliers, headset mics also allow presenters to freely use their hands. A headset microphone would be a good choice for a keynote speaker who turns their head a lot while speaking. A headset will pick up their audio no matter which way their head is turned.

WHEN DO I NEED A MICROPHONE?

We recommend using microphones if your audience is over 40-50 people. Wireless mics for events can even be useful in large breakout rooms, as they can save the presenter’s voice and easily allow them to reach everyone in the room, even the people in the back.

WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE THE MICROPHONE AUDIO WORK?

You will need a sound system to supplement the feed from your microphone. A mixer and speakers will complete your audio system for your event. 

HOW MANY MICROPHONES DO I NEED?

Ideally, it is a good idea to have one microphone per person speaking. While it is possible to share microphones if there are multiple people onstage at the same time, we do recommend having an extra microphone or two on hand to help with the flow of the event.
